Kanat Beisekeyev went for a trip to Romania (we will publish a report from there next year) which is famous not only by its castles and Count Dracula, but also by the fact that Sacha Baron Cohen shot his comedy Borat that tells a story of "working days of Kazakh people". And we became interested as to what Bucharest residents actually know about Kazakhstan.

The Jameson Empire Done in 60 Seconds Competition finals took place in Almaty. For two and half months Kazakhstani were shooting their versions of famous films, but cutting it to one minute, and presented it to the audience. Vox Populi was promoting the competition while it lasted, and last weekend the winner who would represent Kazakhstan at the international finals in London was announced.

December 16, 2011, will leave its mark in history not only as a date of 20-year anniversary of Kazakhstan independence, but also as a beginning of tragic events that took place in western part of the country in a small town of Zhanaozen. Our colleagues from Aktau newspaper Lada witnessed those scary days, and Kazakhstani political scientist Dosym Satpayev gave his thoughts on the reasons that caused mass riots in Zhanaozen.

Two years ago two friends Ulan Karazhigitov and Rustem Karymov decided to launch an online shop BFF.kz, where they were selling Apple products and smartphones of various brands. Their special feature was active use of social networking websites. Thus their followers on Twitter and friends on Facebook became their first clients. This year it is 25 years since the notorious "December events" happened. We should remind, that on December 16, 1986, right after the decision of the Plenum of Central Committee of Communist Party of Kazakhstan unknown to anybody and recommended by the Centre Gennady Kolbin was appointed a new First Secretary. The same day hundreds of students and young workers came out on the Independence (Brezhnev) square and demanded for this decision to be cancelled. The protest that started like a peaceful march ended up as a violent clash between the police and students and lasted for three days. Apart from Alma-Ata, several other cities of Kazakshtan witnessed demonstrations. December events of 1986 made it into history as portents of Kazakhstan independence (the photographs are snapshots from video recordings of December riots of 1986).

2011 has been a year with a lot of good as well as bad things in it, the same as in any other 20 years of independence. In 2011 Asian Games took place in Almaty and Astana, the first underground in Kazakhstan was opened, several terrorist attacks happened in Kazakhstani cities and Uralsk was flooded. We are concluding our project and we hope that it was interesting for you to re-live some moments from the history of our country. In turn, it was very interesting for us to remind you of them.
